Below is a brief characterization of both categories:

Prebiotics:

1. Definition: Prebiotics are a type of nutrients that are not digested or absorbed by the human body, but serve as a food source for the beneficial microorganisms in our intestine.

2. Function: Prebiotics stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria (probiotics) in our digestive tract.

3. Sources: Prebiotics are found naturally in many foods, such as garlic, onions, artichokes, bananas, and sour milk. They can also be complemented.

4. Benefits: The effects of prebiotics help maintain a healthy balance of the microbiome, improve digestion, strengthen the immune system, and can have a positive impact on overall health.

Probiotics:

1. Definition: Probiotics are live microorganisms, such as bacteria or yeast, that when consumed have a beneficial effect on the body’s health.

Warning:

Although both prebiotics and probiotics have many health benefits, caution is necessary when using them. Some people may be sensitive to overgrowth of beneficial bacteria or allergic reactions to certain probiotics.
However, as noted, there is also a natural feeding approach that promotes gut health by providing adequate prebiotics in the diet. This approach focuses on stimulating the growth of natural intestinal microflora through healthy foods rich in prebiotics, without the need to supply probiotics to foreign bacteria. With proper nutrition, the body itself is able to maintain a healthy gut microbiome.
